Coach Herting, a native of Canton, South Dakota, started his coaching career at his alma mater assisting with the women's program at the University of Sioux Falls.  The next year, at the age of 22, he moved over to the men's team as the top assistant working closely with head coach Kevin VandeStreek.  (VandeStreek is now the head coach at Calvin College,MI and has led them to an NCAA DIv. III National Title).  After spending a year on the bench with the men's program at "The Coo", Herting left South Dakota to assist  legendary South Texas coach Carl Owens (850+ career wins) at Harlingen High School.  While working at Harlingen High, the Cardinals posted a record of 107-27 and won 4 district 5A-32 Championships, 3 5A  Bi-District Championships, and 2 5A Area Championships.  After 4 years at HHS, Coach Herting took his first head coaching job at the age of 26.  Herting took over the reigns at Texas private school power, Marine Military Academy in Harlingen, TX.  In his three years at MMA,  Herting led the Leathernecks to a 73-18 record facing top teams from all over the country.  MMA faced top teams from 12 states and 3 countries.  In his three years at MMA, the Leathernecks faced over 60 NCAA Div. One players.  In Herting's tenure, MMA produced 10 NCAA Division One players, and several other college players.   Herting then took over the Bishop Verot program.  He has been at Verot since the 1999-2000 season.  This is his 22nd year at BV making him the longest tenured head basketball coach in Lee County (by 17 years!).   Herting is also has the most wins of any active head coach in Lee County.  He has led the Vikings to 9 District Titles and a SWFL Record 17 Play-off victories.   Coach Herting has been named: News-Press Coach of the Year, Hugh Thimler Lee County Coach of the Year, FACA District 16 3A Coach of the Year (9 times), and SFABC Coach of the Year (twice).  He has also served as the head coach in the SFABC All-Star Game and the FACA Florida North-South All-Star game.  Coach Herting founded the Southwest Florida Association of Basketball Coaches 23 years ago and has served as the president ever since.  He also is one of the founders of the Florida Association of Basketball Coaches is "Past President".   Coach Herting has a son, Kody, a BV alumnus who graduated from the  U.S. Naval Academy and actively serving our country and a daughter, Ali, who graduated from the University of Central Florida.
